The first aluminium-free packaging for yoghurt cups and other dairy products has been launched by Finnish Enso Paperboards. This environmentally-friendly solution has been made possible by using a new paper based lidding material, called Ensolid, which is prepared with a special barrier coating. The lid is said to have good mechanical properties and to allow for convenient peeling without tearing. The material is also reported to have excellent printability with the polymer coated construction providing an effective oxygen, water vapour and aroma barrier. Therefore, the new lidding material is also suitable for packing ice-cream, juice, soft cheese and other dairy products. Its use by dairies is said to be simple, requiring only minor machine investments.

"The development of Ensolid has taken several years. The result is the world's first lidding material based on a direct-extrusion technology which peeles off smoothly when opening. The use of modern process technology enables large production volumes with high profitability.
Also, the paper-based product is more environmentally-friendly than lids made of aluminium. We believe customers prefer to buy food products in packages which they regard as being a better environmental choice", says Tapani Penttinen, Development Manager at Enso Paperboards' development facilities in Karhula, near Kotka, Finland.

Multilayer construction
Ensolid is based on the company's Lumiflex-paper and a multilayer extrusion coating. The polymer coating is intended to allow the lid to be conveniently peeled from the package, and at the same time, to increase the material's barrier properties and its resistance to bursting.
The Lumiflex-paper, which is also a product from the Enso Group, has been specially developed for elastic materials. The paper has a pigment coating for increased printability and UV protection.
"We see a number of advantages compared with lids made of aluminium. The printing quality is better, the sealing of the cup is safe and you can peel the lid from the cup without tearing it apart. In addition, the material provides good resistance against bursting. The material we use is based on components which are recyclable and which are also safe to burn, says Tapani Penttinen of the Karhula factory.
For dairies, the environmentally adapted lid is said not to require any major investments. Normally, the existing machinery can be used with only minor adjustments. In some cases, the welding heads and temperature regulators may have to be adjusted as the sealing temperature of Ensolid is slightly different compared to aluminium based products.
