Stora Enso sets new standards for high quality folding box boards

The beginning of May marks the introduction of new manufacturing standards and quality control systems at Stora Enso's Baienfurt plant in Germany. It is believed to be the first mill in Europe to base its folding box board manufacturing on the stringent hygiene and quality standards normally found only within the pharmaceutical industry that meet European Directives for Good Manufacturing Practice,GMP.

Alongside GMP the mill is introducing risk analysis based on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, HACCP, applied within the food industry. The audit for certification will take place shortly.
"Good Manufacturing Practise, GMP, will introduce new levels of control throughout the Baienfurt plant", says Dr Hermann Solbach, Manager R&D services. "As a major supplier of packaging products to the pharmaceutical and food industries, we have always met stringent hygiene and quality standards. The GMP project and related work go beyond that expected of a packaging materials manufacturer," says Solbach.

International standards
"We looked at European Directives for GMP in the pharmaceutical industry and established its relevance to our production," explains Doerthi Stauber, GMP project manager.
The project involved analysing existing systems and integrating the additional requirements into the mill's manufacturing system including documentation and management control systems. Further, the work will also conform to the internationally recognised, ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental standards.
In parallel with this, Baienfurt is introducing risk assessment systems applied in the food industry. HACCP, is a system to ensure minimal risk of contamination in food related products.
Overall, these measures are intended to have long-term benefits for its customers in the pharmaceutical and food sectors. "GMP will allow Baienfurt to continually improve its products and services though monitoring and self-improvement," says Solbach. "Our long term goal is a Zero Fault Strategy. The aim is to reduce production waste through defects, minimise the risk of contamination and help establish clear guidelines for quality manufacturing. This will provide additional security and safety for our customers," points out Solbach.
The Baienfurt mill manufactures virgin fibre board and fully coated, lightweight folding box board for packaging. It is part of Stora Enso Oy, registered in Finland. This group is one of the world's leading forest product companies with business interests in magazine papers, newsprint, fine papers as well as packaging boards. With annual sales of around EUR 12.4 bn, it employs some 46,000 people in 40 countries.
