Innovation transfer to the USA - Nestlé Wonderball chooses Performa CTMP board

Europe's leading chocolate and confectionery manufacturers already use Stora Enso's Performa CTMP board. Now the board is conquering US markets, where European manufacturers export chocolate packaging. A recent example is the success of Nestlé's new Wonderball packaging. The packaging solution has met Nestlé´s requirements and demonstrates the high competence of the European packaging industry.

Stora Enso's Performa CTMP product range has proven to be especially suitable for packaging odour- and taste-sensitive products. It is a multilayer board with CTMP (Chemi Thermo Mechanical Pulp) in the middle layer and chemical pulp in the outside layers. The board combines the high strength and yield of mechanical pulp and the odour and taint neutrality of chemical pulp.

The organoleptic properties of the CTMP board were of great importance when Nestlé was selecting packaging material for the Wonderball chocolate package. The company´s own panel extensively tested the odour and taint properties of the board, and decided on Performa CTMP board. The company also comprehensively tested the runnability and printing properties of the board, since the Wonderball production volume for the US market is considerable. The good overall economy of the packaging solution was reported as the decisive factor.

"Price per unit is of prime importance in the confectionery business because of the low product prices, as compared, for example, to the cosmetics industry. Therefore, the total costs of packaging are crucial. Performa CTMP provides us significant advantages and, as less material is used, the load on the environment is also reduced. We are also very pleased about the board's suitability for multi-colour printing, since several bright colours are used on the package," says Joachim Soditt, Manager of packaging development at Nestlé Chocoladen GmbH.

Stora Enso has noticed the rapid transfer of innovations in packaging markets from one continent to another, as well as the added value provided by competitive packaging solutions in global markets. Nestlé Chocoladen, for example, produces the Wonderball chocolate packaging in
Germany and transports it to the United States.

"Our customers have had successful packaging solutions with Performa CTMP and that has spread the word effectively among end customers. We have been actively involved in product development with end customers, and Nestlé is a good example of that. The experiences of European manufacturers have also served as a good reference in the US and Asian markets," says Yrjö Aho, Vice President of Stora Enso Packaging Boards.

Facts:
The Wonderball packaging concept consists of 12 individually packed chocolate balls in a retail package. The individual packages of chocolate balls contain stickers, tattoos and hologram images as a surprise for children. In the United States the Wonderball products are promoted using, for example, Disney and Pokemon characters. At www.wonderball.com children can also download various games. The packaging is manufactured by using Stora Enso's Performa CTMP White board.
