New Performa CTMP product family brings savings and benefits to packaging

Europe's biggest forest industry concern, Stora Enso, is launching the new Performa CTMP product family on the market this summer. CTMP combines the best properties of folding box board (FBB) and Solid Bleached Sulphate board (SBS), thus creating a completely new category of packaging board to meet market demand. The new boards have been developed especially for packaging products that are sensitive to tainting. Thanks to its structure Performa CTMP is expected to bring savings of 10-20% for the packaging industry compared with conventional packaging materials states the company.

According to company information, sales of the new Performa CTMP will begin during the summer. Performa CTMP products are targeted at the food sector, for products where the board is in direct contact with a sensitive product. At first the chocolate industry will be one of the most important target groups. Performa CTMP comprises two brands, Performa Natura and Performa White. Performa Natura contains no added optical brighteners, and it is manufactured at Imatra Mills in Finland. Performa White is the whitest version of the board and is manufactured at the Fors Mill in Sweden.
Performa CTMP is a multi-layer board with CTMP pulp in the middle layer, while the outer layers comprise chemical pulps. The structure and furnish of the board provide high stiffness and tear strength and optimization of raw material consumption. Simultaneously the board provides extremely low odour and taint level, which has been demonstrated in both organoleptic and chemical tests.
"This new board category combines the strength and high yield of mechanical pulp and the organoleptic properties of a chemical pulp, offering concrete benefits for the packaging industry. Performa CTMP products are guaranteed to maintain their low taint and odour levels to meet market demand. They make it possible to cut packaging costs by offering 10-20% lower grammage than has been possible so far," states Yrjö Aho, Vice President of Stora Enso Special Food Packaging.
Stora Enso will establish a guarantee of extended shelflife for its new product category. Performa CTMP has good runnability on high speed converting and packaging lines. It is suitable for offset, gravure, and flexo printing methods and all finishing treatments.
