Performa conquers the Nordic chocolate packaging market

Iceland is the latest country to adopt Stora Enso´s Performa Natura CTMP board for packaging chocolate. The use of the board by confectioner Nói Síríus of Iceland means that it is now used by all leading Nordic chocolate manufacturers. This breakthrough comes at a time when Stora Enso is planning to introduce a new member of the Performa family. During summer this year Performa Cream will be launched.

The chocolate industry has been the most important target group of the board family launched a year ago and the result reflects this well. The biggest Nordic chocolate manufacturers such as Marabou (Sweden), Fazer (Finland), Freja (Norway), Anthon Berg (Denmark) have chosen Performa for their premium products and other European manufacturers such as Nestlé and Ferrero also utilise Performa in their packages. Most recently, the board was introduced in Iceland where the leading chocolate manufacturer Nói Síríus switched over to Performa. The packages are manufactured by Nordic Packaging Solutions.

"It was a challenge to change the packaging solution, as we wanted to ensure that our products retain their image of high quality. The package must be able to keep the chocolate's odour and taste properties within our quality standards. We tested the packaging material ourselves, and on the basis of the recommendations of the test panel we chose the Performa board," says Rúnar Ingibjartsson, R & D Director of the Nói Síríus Group.

Performa CTMP is a multilayer board with CTMP (Chemi Thermo Mechanical Pulp) in the middle layer and chemical pulp in the outer layers. The structure and raw material basis of the board provide sufficient stiffness and tear resistance as well as ensure optimisation of raw material consumption. In addition, the board is taint and odour free, which has been demonstrated in both organoleptic and chemical tests.

"Performa has conquered the chocolate packaging market amazingly quickly. We have reached the same results in all chocolate manufacturers' own tests: products packed in Performa CTMP maintain their low taint and odour level. In addition to these organoleptic properties, the board has brought savings in packaging costs for the chocolate industry. This is because board of a 10-20 per cent lower grammage can be used for the packages," says Joakim Stockhaus, Sales Director of Stora Enso Scandinavia AB.

Currently, Performa CTMP comprises three brands. Performa Natura is especially suitable for packing odour and taste sensitive products, and it contains no added optical brighteners. Performa White is the brightest and whitest version of the board and thus suitable for multi-colour printing. The newest member of the product family, Performa Cream, is one side coated with a cream back and suitable for packing odour and taste sensitive products. It will be launched on the market this summer.
