New, more economic packaging paperboard
brand for sensitive confectioneries

Finnish confectionery producer, Fazer, satisfied with the outcome of many extensive tests, has accepted Enso Performa paperboard for the packaging of chocolate confectioneries. Fazer is the first international groceries producer to take the new SBS paperboard, which contains CTMP pulp in its middle layer, as their packaging material.
According to Enso Paperboards in Imatra, which is a business unit of Enso Packaging Boards division, another major Nordic, and one major German confectionery company, have accepted this paperboard as a packaging material for chocolate. Additionally, tests have been and continue to be carried out on its suitability for packaging several sensitive groceries. The results have been extremely promising.

Enso Performa packaging paperboard has well exceeded the requirements of smell and taste tests carried out using the Robinson method. The tests have also proven the stiffness and printing quality properties to be good. "Now we can choose a packaging paperboard which is lower in grammage and therefore, more economic by price. This far we have used Enso Performa to pack our Geisha products but soon we shall take it into use for other products too, such as Fazer Mint and Dumle", says Arvi Nikkanen of Fazer's factory in Helsinki.
Enso Performa, which is produced by Enso Paperboards can be coated with, for example, Ensobarr plastic coating which was developed by the division. This type of High Barrier coating, even when extremely thin, enables the achievement of high grade aroma sealing and crease durability. It is suitable for the packaging of not only chocolate but ice-cream, frozen products, pet food and cigarettes, and dry products such as muesli and snacks.
"Multi-layer SBS paperboard with CTMP pulp is extremely durable and its stiffness properties are comparable to those of FBB paperboard. Compared to other SBS paperboards Enso Performa paperboard achieves similar stiffness properties with 10-20% lower grammage. Additionally, the tear resistance is better than that of folding and SBS paperboards", says Tapani Penttinen of Enso Paperboards coating factory in Karhula.
"Enso Performa is produced in 180 to 350 g/m2 weights and can also be supplied either single or double coated with all known polyethene coatings:
PE, PP, High Barrier or PET", says Sales Director Yrjö Aho and Development Manager Tapani Penttinen.
CTMP pulp is produced in Imatra where Enso Paperboards' paperboard machine 2, one of the biggest in its kind in Europe, is also located. Production capacity of the paperboard machine 2 is 210 000 tons per annum. The good organoleptic properties of the paperboard are achieved with a wash method which is said to be the most modern in Europe. Enso Paperboards plastic coating capacity is 260 000 tons per annum. The business unit also has its own sheeting facility in Imatra and Karhula coating mill./ins
