Lighter and stronger confectionery packaging

A new paperboard with higher tearing strength will give the chocolate manufacturer Kraft Freia Marabou in Sweden lighter and stronger chocolate boxes. Performa 350 g/m2 light-weight paperboard from Enso Paperboards in Finland will replace the Solid Bleached Sulphate, SBS, packaging based on 380 g/m2 paperboard currently used by the sweet company. The new paperboard is reported to meet critical odour and taste criteria required for such packaging. The change will involve the entire annual production of the assorted chocolates, Aladdin and Paradis, in the most popular 500 g packs. Production of the ranges is located to the chocolate manufacturer's largest production site north of Stockholm.

"We are very satisfied with the change to Enso Performa, as we have tried to improve the chocolate packaging for a considerable time. The paperboard's higher tearing strength makes the boxes hold together better. Also, the results of Robinson's odour and taste tests are on the same, or a higher level, than the previous paperboard, says Adam Törnqvist, Packaging Developer at Kraft Freia Marabou in Upplands Väsby, near Stockholm.

Reduced costs
According to Marabou, the new light-weight paperboard will also lead to an annual saving of approximately 27 tons of packaging material, enable waste reduction and lead to substantial cost reductions.
The Performa paperboard from Enso Paperboards is also available with a grease resistant barrier coating, which makes it suitable for packaging of ice cream, frozen products, pet food and tobacco. Through the mixture of CTMP1 and SBS2 pulp, the strength and stiffness is said to be equal to those of FBB3 paperboard, but at 10 to 20 percent lower costs.
"The order from Kraft Freia Marabou shows the possibilities of packaging development in close co-operation with the end users. We have advanced tests going on at several other suppliers of chocolate and food products which are sensitive to odour and taste contamination", says Joakim Stockhaus, Marketing Manager at Enso Sweden AB in Uppsala, Sweden.
The paperboard is available in weight ranges from 180-350 g/m2 and can be coated with all types of extruded plastic coatings: PE (polythene), PP (polypropylene), High Barrier och PET (polyethyleneterephtalate), single or double sided.

Technical notes:
1) CTMP = ChemiThermoMechanical Pulp
2) SBS = Solid Bleached Sulphat
3) FBB = Folding Box Board
