Time and cost savings through use of powerful magnets in pre-cast concrete industry

PCE Engineering Oy Ab has launched its Elematic Fastening Method -system as a flexible and versatile solution to all types of pre-cast concrete production, resulting in time and manpower savings. It will give pre-cast manufacturers access to a complete fixing solution, the company says. The company was the first to develop a solution to fastening based on jaw magnets.

The patented system has been designed for casting different façade elements, walls, panels, beams, fences and flooring products. One of the features of this system is that the mould connections are reusable from cast to cast and does not damage the mould, unlike other fastening methods. The company has created a range of reusable side-forms in light steel or aluminium and accessories to allow users flexibility in setting out their moulds.

Hannu Mononen, customer services manager at PCE, says, "It was developed to provide a flexible, easy to use solution that can be adapted to a variety of pre-cast concrete applications." Overall, Mononen says that the system is, "accurate, light, reliable and an economic long-term investment in addition to its time-saving qualities in all aspects of mould preparation and production."

Magnetic heart
The Elematic Fastening Method -system is based around standardised aluminium side-form structures held in place by powerful jaw magnets. The simple lightweight construction of the magnet belies the fact that each jaw magnet has a holding force of 1.5 tonnes. This strength allows the magnets to easily resist forces from vibrating tables or the concrete itself, yet they are easy to detach after use. Other small fixing magnets are used to fix other parts within the mould.

Alongside the Elematic Fastening Method -system, the company is also making available the ELiLASER, which allows CAD (Computer Aided Design) element drawings via a laser projector mounted on a moveable tracking bed to be used to plan and set out the elements of the mould. In trials at customers, the combination of this system and the new fastening concept resulted in average time savings of 70 percent in setting up and furnishing moulds, says Mononen.

PCE makes machinery and equipment for pre-cast concrete industry and is said to be the world's leading supplier of expertise, equipment and machinery, production lines and plants for the pre-cast industry. Most of PCE's technology is available under the Elematic brand though it also offers the Roth slip-forming and Acotec technologies. The company is part of the Addtek group whose subsidiaries make pre-cast concrete products for a variety of civil engineering works and infrastructure projects based on PCE and other technology.
