Bio-Rad Laboratories AB

Over a period of 40 years, Bio-Rad Laboratories has grown into a leading company in biochemical research and clinical chemistry.

Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc was founded in 1957 by David and Alice Schwartz, a couple of researchers in Berkeley, California. Their idea was to create a laboratory for research and development in chemicals and analytical instruments.

Early in the firm’s history, it was realised that the ion-exchange process used for purifying drinking water could also be used for separation and analysis of earth metals. This discovery was of immense value for researchers who needed to separate isotopes of, for example, strontium or cesium.

The T-4 Test. In 1959, the US Navy began to use Bio-Rad ion exchangeers, which provided the resources for investment and development. Initially, the work involved following up the interest of a number of clinical laboratories in ion-exchange material, and to make contact with doctors who were seeking research methods for thyroid function. Together with clinical researchers, Bio-Rad Laboratories developed a thyroxin test known as the T-4 Test, which is still used by clinical chemists.

In 1960, the company split into two divisions, a chemical division for developing chemical and biological analysis, and a division for clinical chemistry. The next significant stage was the firm’s eletrophoresis production line. From the end of the 60s, Bio-Rad Laboratories has become the world’s largest supplier of electrophoresis products for biochemical research.

The company’s head office is in Hercules, just north of San Francisco. David Schwartz remains Managing Director, and the majority of company shares are still owned by the Scwartz family.

Total turnover for the firm is around USD 420 million.

Up to the present, the company has grown into a group with around 2,600 employees in over 45 countries, and is in addition represented in 70 countries.

Bio-Rad Norden has, since 1962, been represented on the Nordic market through a number of distributors and agents. In 1993 the Nordic subsidiary was established with its head office in Sweden.

In 1994, a sales office was opened in Denmark, followed in 1995 in Finland, and by Norway in 1997. Bio-Rad has actively affected price structure and product range via a controlled assault on local markets. The Nordic group markets all of the firm’s 6,000 products.

Since 1993, the Scandinavian group has grown from 2 to 30 staff. Bio-Rad Norden is also integrated with sales officers in Northern Europe so as to be able to take advantage of collaboration in questions of technical support, product specialists, distribution, and technical service. The potential of the Nordic market is thought to be good within most product ranges. Bio-Rad Norden has been certificated to ISO 9002 since 1994/5, as has the worldwide group.

Development. Collaboration with researchers in many countries throughout the world has led to continuous development. An example in the Nordic region is the development of capilliary electrophoresis, where a well-known professor at Uppsala has made significant progress. A collaborative development with Scandinavian researchers and Professor Anne-Lise Børresen has led to the product ‘D-Gene’, which is an effective method for detecting mutations in DNA molecules.
