New statistical analysis software for the Latin American market

PRESS RELEASE
December 13, 1995
New statistical analysis software
for the Latin American market

A new, statistical software package, translated and customized for the Spanish speaking countries has been launched by US-based computer programme developer, Minitab Inc.
MINITAB Programa estadistíco para Windows is the latest addition to the company’s Spanish language range of quality control, research and teaching software, offering more than 200 statistical procedures. These include general and advanced statistics, data handling and a comprehensive graphics package.
Designed by an international team of translators, the programme uses on-line help, documentation and data sets with Latin American and Spanish themes, metric measurements and context/syntax specific to Hispanic regions.

According to the manufacturer, this is the first statistical software package to use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) both as a client and as a server. This allows the user to transfer data between MINITAB and other windows programmes including Lotus, Excel and Quattro Pro, all of which support DDE. Whenever data in one programme is updated, any linked packages are simultaneously revised.
This function is said to be particularly useful in commercial and industrial applications where rapid and frequent data analysis is necessary.
A wide range of data interpretation tools are included allowing basic statistics such as standard deviation,
t-tests, correlation, and confidence intervals to be processed.
More complex analysis can be carried out using ANOVA, regression analysis, non-parametrics, time series analysis, multi-variate analysis, and graphics brushing.
Powerful graphics tools allow the user to visualize trends in data and communicate results. Users can also customize any aspect of the frame by adapting colours, fonts and sizes; display data as symbols, connection lines, bars, areas or boxes; plus customize graphs using attributes such as titles, footnotes and other annotations. Tool and attribute palettes allow rapid editing.
The Statistical Process Control feature (SPC), provides a range of quality control functions including Shewhart control charts, pareto analysis, fishbone diagrams, variables and attribute control charts, normal and Weibull probability plots. The Design of Experiments (DOE) function includes full and fraction factorial, response surface, and mixture designs.
Machine requirements are an Intel 80386/16 Mhz or greater. A 486 is recommended for applications that frequently use 3D graphics; with a VGA or SVGA monitor; MS DOS 3.3 or later; Windows 3.1; a minimum 10 MB available on hard disk with 20 MB required for installation of optional files. A minimum of 4 MB RAM is required although 6 MB is recommended as is a high-density disk drive. A mouse is required for some applications and a math co-processor is suggested for enhanced performance.
Minitab, Inc, has been developing user-friendly statistical software tools for data analysis and statistical problem solving for more than 20 years. The company serves clients from the business community such as 3M, Apple, Coca-Cola, Kodak, Texaco and Xerox and the academic world including Oxford University, Harvard and Yale./ins
