M-REALS PAPER PROFILES FOR GALERIE PAPERS NOW UPDATED ON WEBSITE

Paper Profiles for all of M-real’s Galerie Papers – Galerie Lite, Galerie Brite, Galerie One, Galerie Fine and Galerie Art - have now been updated to include 2006 figures. They are available on M-real’s website www.m-real.com, with a hyperlink to Paper Profiles on the home page.

“Paper Profile is an admirable, industry-wide scheme, aimed at providing technical environmental information in a standard and transparent way,” says Miika Jokinen, Assistant Vice President, Technical Services for M-real Publishing. “Our customers appreciate having Paper Profiles available on the click of a button, either for printing out or forwarding to their contacts.”

A Paper Profile sets out standardised environmental product information all on a single A4 sheet. This can be printed out to give to customers, external auditors or other stakeholders. A new brochure about the system is available on www.paperprofile.com together with FAQS and contact information for the eleven suppliers in the scheme.

Aimed at the professional paper buyer, each Paper Profile provides details on product composition and environmental management systems in place at the mill where it is made. It also gives information about production related emissions into the atmosphere – such as carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide – and into watercourses – such as nitrogen or phosphorus, together with measures of the resulting water quality. Waste to landfill and energy consumption figures are also covered.

“Paper Profiles are a sophisticated tool, requiring a degree of technical knowledge, but they do answer the sort of questions on environmental responsibility increasingly requested by our customers,” adds Miika Jokinen. “Paper Profiles complement eco-labels and forest certification, allowing buyers to make well informed product choices.”

M-real also publishes two supplements to its standardized Paper Profiles, verified by independent certification bodies. The first includes details of transportation of the raw material to the mill (truck, ship or train; average transport distances), further mill and product details, and recommendations for disposal of the paper and packaging after use. The second supplement gives a breakdown of the origin of wood by country, and the share of certified wood (PEFC/FSC) used in the product./ins
