New Product for Transport Protection Gives Competitive Advantage

Sweden, with its large land area, long distances between population centres and with an economy based on manufacturing and forestry, has long been in the forefront of applications for various forms of product protection during transportation.

Now, a new type of packaging, Lamiflex Soft, has been developed, manufactured in Sweden and marketed in Britain by Eurus Marketing. The product has been introduced after six months' testing at Krupp-Hoesch, the leading German steel maker, who at the end of the test period, have opted to use Lamiflex Soft for metal coil protection.
The traditional Lamiflex product is a 4-5 mm thick laminated mat, used for packaging mainly by heavy industry.
The new Lamiflex Soft is a 10 mm laminate of moisture-resistant polythene-coated paper. It is more porous and shock-absorbant than traditional Lamiflex and is used for the transport of, for example, painted products. An advantage of the soft material is that it does not mark painted materials which are soft or have not completely hardened off.
A special application is for packaging of cable and wire drums. Where cables or wires have to be strung in rough country, as for example with power lines, the shock resistant Lamiflex Soft is an effective protection. For extended outdoor storage, grade WL material is available with a UV stable outer paper coating.
The Swedish company is looking to sell some 200,000 square metres of the product in 1995. Turnover should therefore rise to about SEK 8 million, or about £650,000. In order to reach their sales target, the Swedish company has been working double shifts since February.
Another property of the product is its environmental profile. After use, the packaging can be reconditioned and re-used several times and can, finally, be composted or incinerated.
As a material, it is easy to work with, requires no heavy lifting, and, since both sides are polythene coated, it creates no problems for people with bronchial problems or asthma.
Lamiflex has its origins in the Swedish steelmaking firm Sandvik AB. Today, the company is a privately-owned company with after-tax earnings for 1994 of around SEK 4 million. Its business is the provision of total solutions to packaging and transport-protection problems mainly for heavy industry.
