Investment for the future with environmental profit in mind

The Stora Group has just decided to install a new recovery boiler in their Stora Gruvön paper and pulp mill. This new boiler, at an estimated cost of £46-58 million, will considerably improve the company's environmental standing in respect of pulp production, while also permitting production capacity to be increased as required.

Stora Gruvön, with 1 250 employees, has at present two old recovery boilers that are well worn and cannot meet current emissions standards. Given the choice between renovating these or building a new replacement boiler, costing a further £8 million or so, the latter was decided upon.
The new boiler is said to offer environmental advantages in the form of reduced emissions of sulphur, nitrous oxide and particles. The design is also arranged to permit future operation with a closed production process.
Preliminary planning for the new boiler has been going on for about two years, and the licensing authority has issued a preliminary operating licence whilst the final concession is awaited. Construction is expected to take about 20 months, and offer jobs to a peak figure of about 400 workers in a number of different trades during that time.
The company produces annually about 500 000 tons of paper from its own pulp, and in addition sells a further 100 000 tons of pulp to other mills. Stora Gruvön is part of Stora Paperboard, a division within the Stora Group. The company's products are mainly used for packaging, particularly in the food products industry.

Facts:
During pulp manufacture the wood chips are boiled in a white caustic solution, to dissolve the lignin that holds the fibres together. After boiling, the lye is filtered out and taken to the recovery boiler, where the dissolved wood products are burned. The energy thus released can be used in various production processes, while the chemicals are reclaimed for further use.
