Air-powered pumps increase profitability and improve the printing press environment

The setting-up time for printing presses can be reduced, due to new technology from PIAB. Fast-reacting, quiet and environmentally-friendly compressed air driven pumps can be used throughout the printing process, and in post press operation, according to the company. The quicker processing and more efficient press usage lead to increased profitability.

Now the setting-up time for printing presses can be reduced while increasing quality. All the setting-up information is stored in computer memory and can be applied to similar type runs.
A compressor supplies compressed air to a central chamber. A computer in the chamber controls the distribution of the compressed air to the various pumps in the press.
Pneumatically-driven pumps are fast and quiet. They can operate intermittently and are said to be easy to set up for precisely the right vacuum or pressure levels. In addition, such pumps react very quickly.
Older systems often have their pumps driven by electric motors, which must run continuously, with consequent increased energy consumption, higher temperatures and louder noise levels. Electrically-powered systems often require larger installations for each press. This type of pump can emit an oil mist into the presses and on to the paper. This problem can be completely eliminated by the use of pneumatic pumps, says PIAB.
Pneumatic technology can also be used in post press operations such as trimming, folding, binding and packaging.
Both profitability and quality can be increased by using pneumatics, and the work environment improved at the same time.
The system using air-driven pumps for the graphic industry has been developed by PIAB of Sweden, a trailblazer in the development of applications for pneumatic and vacuum technology. The company has world wide representation by distributors and service centres, including Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
