Worlds Largest Hydraulic Motors Open New Possibilities in Heavy Driving Applications

The world's most powerful low speed high torque (LSHT) gearless drive units. This is how Swedish Hägglunds Drives describes its latest and largest members in the Marathon heavy duty, hydraulic motor series. The Marathon MB 3200 and MB 4000 are based on the company's hydraulic piston motor technology and feature maximum torque levels of 1.1 million and 1.4 million Nm respectively. They can be mounted directly on the driven shaft or machine without intermediate gears. The use of hydraulic motors is said to eliminate a number of problems normally associated with electromechanical drives in heavy industrial applications.

"The Marathon motors are designed to operate under the toughest conditions with a minimum of maintenance. Due to the low moment of inertia, the motors are insensitive to shock loads. This make them ideal for use in apron feeders, sugar cane mills, bucket wheels and other demanding industrial applications", says Mr. Ulf Henricson, Technical Project Manager at Hägglunds Drives in Mellansel, Sweden.
Unlike conventional drive systems with a variable-speed electric motor and a gearbox transmission, hydraulic motors can be fitted directly onto the driven shaft without any foundations. They provide full torque from standstill to maximum rotational speed. In addition, they absorb shock loads and start/stop peak loads, which eliminates the need for heavy and expensive oversizing.

New sizes
Hägglunds Drives' two new sizes of motors are an extension of the company´s MB 1600 and MB 2400. They use a radial-piston design with a stationary housing and a rotating hollow shaft.
The MB 3200 has four cam rings and offers a continuous torque of more than 1.1 million Nm*. The top-of-the-line MB 4000 has five cam rings and produces 1.4 million Nm* of continuous torque. Maximum speeds are 16 rpm and 12 rpm respectively.

*) With a maximum operating pressure of 350 bar.
