"Compact" Motor for Augers

An hydraulic drive motor could offer many advantages in earth auger applications including low maintenance and ability to handle shock loads.

Hagglunds Drives' hydraulic drive systems offer an alternative to traditional gearbox drive systems in earth auger applications. In addition to their ability to deliver high power from a compact unit, problems of electrical insulation often encountered in conventional gearbox systems can be avoided.
The "Compact" motors operate as a direct drive with no gears. They can deliver full torque upon starting and offer simple load control. Normally the motor is attached directly onto the drive shaft or winch drum. The 110mm diameter through hole in the centre of the motor enables, for instance fluids to be channeled through.
- The unit is easy to install and incorporate into any design, says Ingemar Borg, Business Area Manager at Hagglunds Drives
One of the features of the design is that the auger can be fully controlled across its entire speed range. The motor can also provide full torque from standstill to maximum rotational speed.
This line of motors has a power to weight ratio of around 1.5 to 2.0 kW/kg (0.9 -1.2 Hp/lb) which is three to four times higher than today's industry standard for motors in the 100-600 kW (135-820 Hp) range.
