See the TV universe through a new lens
It's been called the antenna of the year, a space revolution and the solution that's poised to relegate the humble satellite dish to stone-age status. What is it? It's the Cybertenna and it could soon be coming to a roof-top near you.
Looking like nothing else in TV-heaven, it's immediately apparent that this answer to the problem of multi-satellite reception is very different from its competitors. As it's makers say - it's a lens, not a satellite dish.At just 80 cm in diameter, it has a concave front surface that tapers into a 20 cm large hole. This cuts wind resistance and ensures that the dish won't move should the weather turn nasty.
Capable of receiving signals from as many as eight satellites at once, the antenna's lens design means that it is possible to pick up transmissions from multiple points in space -even if these are located at sharp angles in relation to the lens' surface.
Signals are amplified then fed the LNBs, which are mounted behind rather than in front of the lens, through a series of conductive channels that are coated with a specially developed material.
This is said to greatly reduce the signal loss that often occurs with traditional DTH dish equipment when side-feeding is employed. And with remarkably low cross-polarisation between satellites, signal interference between channels has virtually been eliminated in this design.
The lens uses a single cross-polar lobe which is angled in the same direction as the antenna itself which further reduces antenna noise, improving performance into the bargain.
As the Cybertenna only weighs around 8 kg (without LNBs), it's a light-weight alternative to traditional multi-feed or motorised dishes. For multi-feed requirements, it can carry as many as eight LNBs.
The Cybertenna should be generally available across Europe during mid of 2001 and, the manufacturer says, is the perfect solution for viewers looking for a compact, efficient multi-feed system.
