Prestigious prize for different conveyor belt technology

The Swedish conveyor belt company Sicon Roulunds has just been awarded a special prize by the trade organisation SCEMMI in its "Scandinavian First Maintenance Service Award" competition.

The jury justified its decision by saying that "Sicon Roulunds' closed loop conveyor belts represent a new line of thought" and "The ingenious design also solves many plant problems, while at the same time considerably reducing wear and effects on the environment."
The Sicon system, based on a rubber belt that folds up to form a drop-shaped bag, is claimed to offer many advantages over more conventional conveyor belt technologies.
The new conveying method means that the material being transported is enclosed so that dust and spillage can be kept to a minimum, thus permitting the handling of hazardous products with less risk to both the environment and personnel.
This design will also make it possible to negotiate sharp curves, use steeper transport angles and have multiple loading and unloading points. All this is said to be achievable by one single belt without using any transfer points.
"We save about SEK 2 million a year by replacing our previous pneumatic conveying system with a Sicon conveyor for the transport of our raw materials," says Matts Bådholm, who is the Maintenance Manager for Isover Gullfiber AB, part of the French Saint Gobain Group.
Most of the savings come from reduced maintenance and energy costs. Even in respect of operational reliability and environmental protection there is a definite improvement compared to the previously used system.
