New type of encoder saves time and money for industry

The Swedish company Leine & Linde has extended its product range to incorporate absolute 25-bit multi-turn encoders for industry. Accuracy is claimed to be very high. Production hold-ups can be avoided or minimised due to advanced diagnostics and error-handling functions, thus saving time and money. The encoder, which is bus-connected, supports the standard SSI, PROFIBUS-DP, and CAN-bus interfaces.

According to the manufacturer, the encoder is suitable for applications such as materials handling, packaging and textile machinery, machine tools, and various automated manufacturing processes. The encoder is programmable and has advanced alarm and warning functions.
‘After a power failure, this type of encoder allows the operator to restart the machine without having to reset it’, explained Ulf Thorsander, designer at the company. ‘In the same way, an automatic warehouse truck fitted with a multiturn encoder can return to its programmed course after a breakdown without missing a retrieval point.
‘A machine tool can have as many as eight or ten spindles’ Thorsander continued. ‘So it takes a long time to get them all back to the datum point after a power failure. There’s a high risk of error, and a mistake in resetting can mean high scrappage rates in large production runs. Using an absolute multiturn encoder avoids these risks’.

Bus-connected encoder
Parallel and incremental encoders require input from one computer each. This new encoder is bus-connected, which means reduced costs for cabling and in some cases also for connector cards. Bus-connection also ensures intelligent communication between the encoder and the machine control system, the computer. The operator is thus given information on the encoder’s status and can rapidly change any encoder which is not functioning. In such cases, the machine is automatically shut down by the control system.
The device is a 25-bit high-quality multiturn encoder with a resolution of 13 bits per rev(8,192 positions), as well as 12-bit rev-counting, which is to say that it will count 4,096 revs before it restarts from zero. The resolution (gauge length) and zero-point can be adapted via the software for various mechanical installations. Measurement accuracy is claimed to be better than ± 0.5 bit.
‘We have brought about the development of a specification (profile) for how optical angle encoders communicate via the PROFIBUS-DP interface’, claimed Ulf Thorsander. ‘The new PROFIBUS encoder supports classes 1 and 2 in this profile’.
