New die design expands pressure sensor versatility

Higher performance and reduced OEM pricing significantly increase application potential for the EG&G IC Sensors Model 1451 pressure sensor, the company reports. The new silicon die cuts production costs and has better stability and linearity than is typical of comparable piezo electric devices. Options such as gauge or absolute pressure ranges, large or small ports, and compatibility with automated assembly further enhance application diversity.

The surface mount Model 1451 is available in five gauge or absolute ranges from 0-0.35 bar to 0-6.9 bar, and is designed to address applications where cost and size are critical. Examples include home blood pressure monitoring instruments, on-board vehicle tire pressure monitoring, diving watch depth sensing, textile air-shuttle control and barometric pressure compensation correction. O-17 bar and 0-34.5 bar absolute ranges are also available on a special order basis.
The three port options allow for either tube connection as in the case of barometric pressure compensation, or direct access through a large or narrow hole. The large hole can be gel-filled or coated with vapor deposited paralene to protect the sensor from aggressive media. Pressure non-linearity of the Model 1451 is ±0.25%, and long term stability is typically ±0.5% span/year. Repeatability characteristics are suitable for high performance, microprocessor applications.
The sensor can be powered with either a constant current or constant voltage power supply, and the output is ratiometric with the supply. This allows customers to select power and output levels with consumption suitable to their application constraints. "Pulsed power" can also be used, and the repeatability performance will remain consistent with a given power supply configuration.
EG&G IC Sensors, located in Milpitas, California, USA, designs and manufactures silicon, micromachined pressure sensors, accelerometers and custom microstructures, which are marketed worldwide.
